Introduction to Endangerment Crisis
- Time and again, wildlife organizations like WWF and PETA have warned human civilization about the impending extinction of many species in the animal kingdom.
- They warned us on how there are thousands of animal species with reduction in their population and on the verge of extinction
- Constant poaching of some animal species while environmental asphyxiation of other species caused by global warming, have proven to be reasons enough to realise that the threat they warned us about are immediate.
- Now here we are, with almost a decade of trying every possible way to protect the species degrading in numbers and yet we are struggling.
- According to environmentalists and zoologists, there are about 1 million species on the road to extinction in the coming decade and more than 7,09 species already extinct in the past few.
Endangered Animals- Causes & Consequences
- It may seem as if endangered animals just affect their own population, but that is not true.
- As insignificant as it may seem, the endangerment of an animal species, it is just the contrary of insignificant. Thus showing us how interlinked every element of nature’s ecosystem is and how the removal of even one element causes the entire ecosystem to become imbalanced.
- The disappearance of a species has significant effects on the region in which its existence kept the nature there balanced.
- It leads to environmental imbalances like loss in crop pollination, loss of water purification and more.
- Loss of population growth and other harmful practices are other aftereffects of endangerment.
- Endangerment in itself is a consequence of centuries worth of habitat destruction and over harvesting. So now that it has turned into a cause itself, we can very well see the consequences of animals getting endangered.
- But now, the need of the hour is to shield the animals from such environmental and human danger.
Protecting The Endangered Animals
Volunteerism
- The initial active approach to a worldwide crisis like that of wildlife, which almost resembles the case of a forest fire that cannot be tamed single handedly, is to first show that the crisis needs mass attention.
- This is where volunteer work plays a role. But, It must be noted that without being a volunteer themselves, one cannot influence many people to volunteer. So, the first step is to actively volunteer.
- Rescue centres for wildlife are naturally a prime hotspot for wildlife volunteers who want to tend to the injured and abandoned animals. However, most of these animals do not become fit enough to be let back into the wild and survive on their own.
- Another way to actively volunteer and simultaneously encourage volunteerism is to start collecting data on exotic species by active fieldwork and spread that knowledge.
- What this kind of volunteerism entails is that such kind of information induces others to do research that often leads them to take anti-poaching efforts on their own.
- Such productivity from each civilian can change the direction of the current winds of endangerment.
Sanctuary Patronizing
- Years of watching animals turn endangered has not gone completely ignored, and some wildlife sanctuaries are proof of that.
- Sanctuaries are like wildlife simulations where animals are conserved in their natural habitat.
- This condition applies for all animals, from injured exotic creatures to bought and abandoned animals.
- But not all sanctuaries hold the best interest because many just conserve animals to rally them for selfish entertainments like circuses. Thus, when one does patronize a wildlife sanctuary, they have to screen the sanctuaries thoroughly before making a pick.
- Every visit to a wildlife sanctuary marks some contribution into their fund. So, these sanctuaries have to be the ones that treat and respect their animals right.
- It must be remembered that sanctuaries are for the wildlife to retire, not visitors.
New Technology
- Technology has always played an important role in accuracy in almost all fields, almost aiding us to make predictions.
- In the case of wildlife, drones and cameras and GPSs are today used to monitor not just the pattern of movement of animals but also their habits in their natural habitat.
- What this entails is that we can track their choice of changes in habitats and food choices, which gives us a headstart on the animal’s concern of personal survival and hence their endangerment.
Sustainable Lifestyle
- The loss of habitat of animals that contributes towards their endangerment is because of the outrageously imbalanced lifestyle of human beings.
- Living non-environmental lives aided by all non-renewable resources cause a drastic imbalance across the ecosystem, even inducing global warming.
- A sustainable lifestyle is directly related to protecting endangered animals.
Governmental Changes
- All the above choice of plans are extremely civilian oriented and maybe even take a long time to be actively implemented.
- So, to have a mass impact, the active voices must reach the ears of the right powers.
- In fact, we must become better choosers in voting for our representatives and analysing what they really stand for.
- Protection of endangered animals is not just an environmental cause, but it stands for more than that.
